A 90s-Inspired Look for Heading Into Fall

A 90s-Inspired Look for Heading Into Fall

For many, fall means going back to school. With college campuses opening their doors once again, football season kicking-off and the resurgence of 90s fashion, I couldn’t help but wonder what I’d be wearing if I were a freshman heading off to class at NYU.

Back in Tallahassee, Florida where I went to college (GO NOLES!), one’s favorite pair of blue jeans, a dude’s fraternity t-shirt and a pair of Reef sandals easily sufficed. Maybe I’ve watched too much Gossip Girl, but I feel like if you’re a woman going to college in the Big Apple you’ve got to have style or at least more than the 18-year-old version of me who would wear face paint and ribbons in her hair on game days in 1999.

Now, I wouldn’t trade my college experience for a full scholarship at any of the Ivy League schools. But I can’t help but wonder what life would have been like in school here in New York City.

Anyway, the real story here is the versatility of the color olive. Since olive is so easy to style at any given time of the year (especially during the fall), it’s not a bad idea to have a few different pieces in your wardrobe sporting this hue.

As you can see, this olive green asymmetric skirt with tiered ruffles by Cinq a Sept looks great when paired with bright yellow (handbag is from Pinko), a basic neutral (sheer blouse is by The Kooples) and even a metallic (two-toned pumps by Nicolas Kirkwood). The preppiness gets cut with some edge by the addition of fishnet socks, inspired, of course, by 90s grunge and pop culture fashion.

That said, adding a pair of fun fishnet socks can get you more wears out of your summer sandals and pumps. Here’s how I wore them last year, along with a pair of soft cashmere socks.

For this heading-into-fall look, a navy blazer would look great during the cooler mornings and evenings. Once temps officially cool down, you can opt for a long-line blush-colored coat.

Below you can see a round-up of stylish olive green items worthy of mixing and matching in the coming season, as well as a few styling options that’ll give just the right amount of 90s nostalgia to keep you on-trend as you head back to school or work post-Labor Day.

You look great and can definitely pull off those fishnet socks! I love the idea of a navy blazer for fall. Great post!
