How to Create a Belt Bag

How to Create a Belt Bag

I’d like to know if anyone saw the return of the fanny pack coming because I sure didn’t! When I first read about this resurgence, I may have let an epic eye roll be the welcome back greeting, but I’ve since changed my tune… well, about belt bags that is.

You see, there is a difference in style between the two. The fanny pack is a polyester or nylon canvas bag that wraps the entire waist (and also reminds me of tourists at Disney World) while the belt bag is a leather (faux or real) belt with a stylish, wallet-sized purse attached to it (sounds much better, right?!).

So, beyond this new aesthetically pleasing style, what changed my mind about making this trend part of my wardrobe? Well, as it ends up, the belt bag design is actually pretty efficient. This is especially true now during winter since I’ve been all bundled up in fluffy, faux fur coats. While wearing a belt bag, I don’t have to worry about my purse slipping off my shoulder or not fitting around all my layers. Plus, it’s nice to not have another item to keep track of when running around the city.

Since some of you may still be on the fence about embracing such a trendy item, I’ve come up with a way for you to test out the belt bag life with an item that you may already have.

It’s so simple, here’s how:

1 Take one of your small crossbody bags that has long straps and a buckle on it. Undo the buckle.

2 Wrap the straps high around your waistline and adjust the bag so that it hangs down to one side. Let the bag and wrapped straps fall to a natural resting place around your waist.

3 Bring the straps together to buckle them and then ta-da – you have a belt bag!

Lastly, what I find to be the best part of this styling trick is that you get more wears out your crossbody bags by making them convertible to a belt bag! If you like the design of the one that I styled, you can find it in more colors on the Deux Lux website.

Below you can see more of how I created this belt bag out of this metallic crossbody, as well my favorite fur coat, cashmere sweater and pair of flared, cropped denim of the moment (boots are by Zara).

I love the creative spirit here! I’m going to see what I can do. It also occurs to me that you could use small crossbody bags and their removable straps interchangeably. Thanks for the inspiration!!
