Ever since streetwear went mainstream and the tech folks out in Silicon Valley made hoodies entrepreneur-chic, the sweatshirt has been making more frequent appearances in recent clothing collections. These fresh editions are no longer reserved for gym sessions (or, let’s be honest, lounging around), as they now feature bright colors, embroidery, logos, and slogans that are on a need-to-be-seen basis. Still, it’s possible to sport one of these comfortable classics in a less than flattering way so here’s how I avoid looking like a frumpy, hot-mess while wearing a sweatshirt.
To start, find a sweatshirt that’s wide and cozy but is also cropped. Chances are that if you’re swimming in your sweatshirt, you’re going to look like it too, so a shorter version is a clear way to avoid this circumstance. These cropped sweatshirts (here and here) by TOPSHOP hit at just the right spot for pairing with a high-waisted trouser (here and here). Given that the tops are a solid color, opting for a seasonal print or a set of stripes will make the sweatshirt pop. This pairing also makes it look like more thought went into the outfit versus if you just tossed on your favorite denim. Lastly, don’t forget a pair of futuristic, en vogue shades to top-off your stylish look.
Below, you can see more of how I styled these sweatshirts, along with a few other top picks for the season.
